GLEN HELEN 125/250 NATIONAL TRACK MAP

The MXA wrecking crew just happens to know the guy who designs the Glen Helen National track. We asked him what this year’s track would look like for the AMA 125/250 National on May 11. He handed us a map. Here it is.

WHAT ARE THE BIG CHANGES?
There are four major changes to the Glen Helen National Track for 2003.

INFIELD: The left-hand turn following Talledega will not be a hairpin this year. The riders will enter into a natural ampitheater section (with elevated viewing section). The left into the infield section will be followed by a tight 180-degree bowl turn and a 90-degree right-hander up Shoei Hill. The right hand turn will lead to a triple-deck step-up

ELEVATOR: From the top of Shoei Hill the riders will drop down to the bottom of Mt. Saint Helen, but instead of continuing down towards the grandstands, they will have to stop at the bottom of the Elevator, make a tight corner and charge up Mt. Saint Helen with no run at it. This corner is destined to be the hardest corner in the sport of motocross. From a vertical downhill to a vertical uphill in less than 50 feet.

YAMAHA HILL: The ultra-fast Yamaha Hill, which is actually the tallest hill of the three major hills at Glen Helen, will be slowed down by the addition of a sweeping, downhill, left-hand turn at the bottom. The turn starts while the riders are still on Yamaha Hill and drops an additional 50 feet to the left. This turn will lead to the big tabletop on the back straight.

SAND WHOOPS: Glen Helen is screening all-new sand for the whoop section. Last year’s sand section, which was used at the World Four-Stroke Championship recently, will be abandoned. A new sand section, with rock-free, beach sand, will be built 40 feet to the left of the current sand section. If you thought last year’s whoops were big, wait until this year.

REGULAR STUFF: Of course, the much hated by the riders, but massively popular with the fans mud straight will still be included, along with the steeply banked Talledega first turn and giant step-up out of the Canyon to the hill climb up Yamaha Hill.

WHO'S IN AND WHO'S OUT!
What gives with the 250 class? This year started out with a bang, but week by week, we keep losing another top 250 rider. Now we’re left to watch Ricky Carmichael and Chad Reed duke it out week after week. That’s not much fun. The Outdoor Nationals are just around the corner, but will it just be a continuation of this Supercross series?

In truth, it looks like this season might start out a little on the slow side, but everyone will gain momentum a few races into it. Slow, you might ask? It’s simple. Riders like Travis Pastrana have been sitting dormant for three months healing up for the Nationals. They haven’t raced in months, so they’ll have to get used to it again. In Travis’ case, he could have raced Salt Lake and Las Vegas, but why risk an injury? There will be a bunch of top riders returning at Glen Helen, though.

Here’s a list of what the 250 class at Glen Helen is forming up to be:

HONDA:
Ricky Carmichael
Nate Ramsey--riding at Glen Helen every week
Mike LaRocco
Travis Preston--hurt knee, torn MCL but still might race
Kevin Windham--putting in some really fast laps
Larry Ward
Damon Huffman
Kyle Lewis

SUZUKI:
Travis Pastrana
Sebastien Tortelli--raced at REM last Saturday
Sean Hamblin
Stephane Roncada--possibly

KAWASAKI:
Ezra Lusk

YAMAHA:
Chad Reed--wouldn’t miss it for the world
David Vuillemin--back is healed
Tim Ferry
Nick Wey
Heath Voss

KTM:
Grant Langston--250Sx or 450SX?
Joaquim Rodrigues
