As
part of the preparation for the September 9,
2007, AMA 250/450 National Championship event,
Glen Helen has been working hard to increase
spectators access to all parts of the track.
Last month, Glen Helen added six
"under-the-track" tunnels so that fans could
more easily move back and forth around the
track. And this weekend, the Glen Helen National
crew, led by Karl Scanlon, installed a brand-new
130-foot steel girder bridge.
HOW BIG
IS TOO BIG?
The new steel bridge crosses
over two sections of the track (at the bottom of
Shoei Hill and on the way up Mt. Saint Helen).
It will allow spectators to cross back and forth
without having to wait for a manned gate to be
opened. It replaces the old tunnels that went
under the previous ski jump.
The enormous
bridge was bought from the Long Beach Harbor,
and had to be trucked in the middle of the night
from the Port of Long Beach to Glen Helen
(imagine driving down the freeway in rush hour
with a 130-foot long bridge on your truck). The
bridge weighs thousands of pounds and required
an excavator to move it into position and hoist
it on top of its steel
platforms.
